Storylines Betty Gilderdale Award Presentation

On Saturday 23 November 2024, Joy Sellen, winner of the Storylines Betty Gilderdale Award presented her Storylines Spring Lecture at the Newtown Community Centre , Wellington.

Joy Sellen’s lecture, Discovering Treasure: New Zealand Stories for Young Readers, offers a compelling narrative of her journey in children’s literature, shaped by her personal love for reading and her professional dedication to fostering literacy. Joy reflects on how her early experiences, while not directly tied to children’s books, informed her passion for amplifying diverse voices and ensuring stories are heard.

Each book opened is a treasure, not just for the reader but for the world they engage with and contribute to. This lecture is a heartfelt reminder of the enduring impact of stories in shaping lives and communities.
